Five Country Dancers and three Country Dancers alumni travel to Denmark this summer as part of a large group of dancers from the Folk Circle Association of Berea, Kentucky, which also includes members of Berea Festival Dancers, O Contraire contra dance group, the Lexington Vintage Dancers, Rapa Bora (rapper and morris dance team), and Berea College Bluegrass Ensemble. Our purpose is to continue the Danish-American Exchange that has been active between Berea and the folk dance community in Denmark since the 1920s, but especially since the 1970s. We will be hosted by families in the Vendsyssel region of northern Jutland for a week, then participate in the Landsstœvne national sports and cultural event that happens every 4th year in Denmark. Sponsored by DGI, the Danish Sports Association, 35-40,000 participants are expected, with 80-100,000 spectators. Celebration of the 4th of July at Rebild National Park, including Berea College President Lyle Roelofs as special guest will be followed by several days of touring other places in Denmark, visiting dance groups and friends, and ending up in Copenhagen.
